Building a Legacy for Christ

A poem based off today’s sermon at church

Building a Legacy for Christ
By Jennifer Kane

I am a mist that appears for a little while,
And then vanishes—
A fleeting breath in the vastness of time.
But to leave a legacy,
It takes labor,
A holy determination,
A drive to leave something eternal behind.

To build a legacy for Christ Jesus,
I must become an expert builder,
Careful with the tools of faith,
Diligent with the foundation of love.

I need my people—
For no wall stands strong in isolation,
No kingdom rises alone.
I cannot make an impact on my own.

Do I share my faith boldly,
As Paul and Silas did,
Who met Lydia in prayer
And baptized her whole household?
Or like when the prison shook,
The jailer’s chains of doubt fell loose,
And his family found eternal freedom?
Their lives echoed,
A legacy for generations.

So, I ask myself:
What stones am I laying?
What hearts am I reaching?
Do I work with the eternal in mind,
Or am I building on shifting sands?

Lord, teach me to labor for You,
To plant seeds of truth,
To water with love,
And to trust You with the harvest.
For the legacy I long to leave
Is not of my name,
But of Yours,
Eternally written
In the hearts of those I serve.
