I hate double-minded people, but I love your law. You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God! Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees. You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their delusions come to nothing. All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes. My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.

Samek ס: Held in His Word
By Jennifer Kane
When my strength wavers,
when the weight of the world presses down,
I reach for the only thing that does not shift—
His word, steady as the dawn.
The wicked build on sinking sand,
their promises crumble like dust in the wind.
But You, Lord, are my refuge,
Your truth, a foundation that will not fail.
You hold me up when my steps falter,
when fear creeps in, whispering doubt.
Your statutes are the arms beneath me,
lifting, steadying, reminding me—
I am not alone.
I tremble at Your power,
not in terror, but in awe.
You are justice, You are mercy,
You are the hand that upholds,
the voice that speaks,
the light that never fades.
Let me never stray from Your word.
Let me stand, upheld, unshaken,
held fast in the love of my God.

Scripture: Psalms 119:113-120
Life can feel like a storm sometimes, can’t it? Everything around us seems shaky, and it’s hard to know where to stand. But Psalm 119 reminds us that God’s Word is our solid ground. The psalmist says, “You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word” (v. 114). When the world feels heavy, God’s Word is like a steady anchor, something we can hold onto that won’t let us down. Isn’t that such a comforting thought? No matter how crazy life gets, His Word is always there, steady and sure.
But the psalmist doesn’t sugarcoat things. He knows how easy it is to get pulled in different directions. He says, “I hate the double-minded, but I love Your law” (v. 113). It’s a reminder that we can’t have one foot in God’s truth and the other in the world. We have to choose. And here’s the thing—we don’t have to do it alone. The psalmist prays, “Uphold me according to Your word, that I may live” (v. 116). He’s saying, “God, I can’t do this without You. Hold me up!” Isn’t that beautiful? We don’t have to rely on our own strength. God’s Word holds us up.
And then there’s this moment where the psalmist just stops and marvels at God’s power and justice. He says, “My flesh trembles for fear of You, and I am afraid of Your judgments” (v. 120). It’s not a scared kind of fear—it’s awe. It’s realizing how big and holy God is, and how much we need His mercy. That’s the kind of God we serve—One who is both just and loving, powerful and kind.
So here’s the thing that matters: In a world that’s always changing, God’s Word doesn’t. It’s our refuge, our strength, and our guide. When life feels overwhelming, reach for it. Let it hold you up. And when you’re in awe of who God is, let that awe draw you closer to Him. His Word is steady, His love is sure, and He’s got you. Always.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which upholds us, guides us, and reveals Your heart. Help us to love it, treasure it, and live by it each day. May we find our strength and hope in You alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
