In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Word and the Light
By Jennifer Kane
In the beginning—
Life.
Light.
The Word was with God,
And the Word was God.
He came not as thunder,
But as breath,
Not blazing fire,
But quiet flame wrapped in flesh.
He walked among dust-lit creatures,
Who had forgotten
They were made to glow.
He came into the dark—
Not just the world’s,
But mine—
And lit it from within.
Words charged with power,
Love that does not flicker.
Truth that doesn’t shout,
But stands,
Unmoved,
Unchanging,
Calling me home
Into the Light
With Him.

Scripture: John 1:1-51
I’m doing a series in the Gospel of John for the next three weeks. One chapter per day.
John begins his Gospel with a bold declaration: Jesus is the Word—eternal, divine, and active in creation. Before anything else existed, He was. This isn’t just poetic language; it’s profound theology. Jesus is not merely a messenger from God; He is God, the very expression of God’s heart, mind, and will.
By calling Jesus the Word (Greek: Logos), John ties Him to both the creative power of Genesis and the wisdom of God seen throughout Scripture. This Word became flesh and entered our world full of grace and truth. And with Him, He brought light—a light that shines in the deepest darkness, untouched and undefeated by it.
As we begin this journey through John, consider: where in your life do you need His light to shine? Are there places of confusion, sin, grief, or fear? Jesus, the Word made flesh, came not only to reveal God but to restore what was broken and bring life where there was death.
To say Jesus is the Word is to say He is God’s final and fullest message to humanity. Everything God wants to say to us is found in Him. And to say Jesus is the Light is to say that no darkness—within us or around us—can overcome His presence.
In Him, we don’t just find understanding; we find transformation.
What does it mean to you that Jesus is the Word?
Consider how Jesus reveals God’s character, truth, and purpose.
How has the light of Jesus overcome darkness in your life?
Think about a time when God’s truth brought clarity, healing, or freedom.

My Lord, Thank You for being the Word—the full expression of God—and the Light that shines in my darkness. Open my eyes to see You more clearly. Speak into the places of my life where confusion and sin hide, and let Your light bring freedom, hope, and peace. Help me to love Your Word and to live in Your light. Amen.
