“Grace At Saying Farewell”

Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith— to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
—Romans 16:25-27

I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand. If anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be cursed! Come, Lord! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love to all of you in Christ Jesus. Amen.
—1 Corinthians 16:21-24

Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All God’s people here send their greetings. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
—2 Corinthians 13:11-14

From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.
—Galatians 6:17-18

Peace to the brothers and sisters, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.
—Ephesians 6:23-24

Greet all God’s people in Christ Jesus. The brothers and sisters who are with me send greetings. All God’s people here send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
—Philippians 4:21-23

I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.
—Colossians 4:18

Brothers and sisters, pray for us. Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss. I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
—1 Thessalonians 5:25-28

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
—2 Thessalonians 3:16-18

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. Grace be with you all.
—1 Timothy 6:20-21

The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you all.
—2 Timothy 4:22

Everyone with me sends you greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.
—Titus 3:15

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
—Philemon 1:25

Grace At Saying Farewell
By Jennifer Kane
(Inspired by the farewells of Paul)

We go where He leads.
Farewell, dear friend in Christ.
Not goodbye forever,
but grace for the road ahead.

May the Lord of peace Himself
give you peace—
at all times and in every way.
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.

I write this with affection and care,
remembering the gospel—
once a mystery, now revealed—
to bring about the obedience of faith.
To the only wise God
be glory forever,
through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Rejoice always.
Strive for full restoration.
Encourage one another.
Be of one mind.
Live in peace.
And the God of love and peace
will be with you.

My love to all of you in Christ Jesus.
Greet one another with warm hearts
and true kindness.
The brothers and sisters here
send you their greetings.

Until we meet again—
talk soon, take care,
stay strong in the Lord.
Whether you say goodbye,
so long,
ciao,
or adiós—
go in grace.

Wishing you well.
Godspeed.

Remember my chains.
Guard what’s been entrusted to you.
Walk in love,
with a faith that does not fade,
and a hope that holds fast.

Grace be with your spirit.
Keep what is good.
Stand firm in sound teaching.
Be strong in the Lord.

Those who love us in the faith
send their greetings.
May you be refreshed in Christ.
May peace and love with faith
come from God the Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Parting is such sweet sorrow—
but take heart:
He is near.
Come, Lord Jesus.

With appreciation and warm regards,
Grace be with you all.
Amen.

Scriptures: Romans 16:25-27, 1 Corinthians 16:21-24, 2 Corinthians 13:11-14, Galatians 6:17-18, Ephesians 6:23-24, Philippians 4:21-23, Colossians 4:18, 1 Thessalonians 5:25-28, 2 Thessalonians 3:16-18, 1 Timothy 6:20-21, 2 Timothy 4:22, Titus 3:15, and Philemon 1:25

When we think of the Apostle Paul, we often remember his bold preaching, deep theology, and stirring challenges to the early church. But if we linger at the very end of his letters—the places we might be tempted to skim—we find something just as vital: a tender model for how to say goodbye.

Over and over, Paul ends his letters with encouragement, blessings, and personal affection:

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” (Romans 16:20)
“Be strong in the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:10)
“Remember my chains.” (Colossians 4:18)

These farewells are more than just formal closings. They are moments of deep spiritual connection. Paul isn’t just ending a letter—he’s commissioning his readers to keep going in faith, to remember one another in love, and to hold fast to the grace that binds us together.

Paul’s endings remind us that our words, even in parting, can carry eternal weight. Whether we’re leaving a coffee conversation, writing a quick message, or saying goodbye for a season—we have the opportunity to speak life.

In a world where partings can be cold or rushed, Paul teaches us to end with warmth, grace, and encouragement. His farewell becomes a benediction—an outpouring of God’s blessing on those he loves.

Think of the last time you said goodbye to someone. Did you take the opportunity to encourage them?
How can you be more intentional in your farewells—whether in person, over text, or in writing?
Is there someone in your life who could use a Paul-style word of grace today?

This week, end each of your conversations or messages with a blessing. Try using one of Paul’s own farewells—or create your own rooted in Scripture. For example:

“May God’s peace go with you.”
“Grace be with your spirit.”
“Keep walking in faith—He’s with you.”

~~~~~
Father, help us speak life, even in our goodbyes. Let our partings echo Paul’s—full of love, truth, and the grace of Jesus. May our words linger in the hearts of others as reminders of Your presence and care. In your name, I pray, Jesus, amen.
