“Attributes of God: Solitariness”

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.
— Ephesians 1:11

Stand up and bless the Lord your God forever and ever. Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.
— Nehemiah 9:5

Who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
— 1 Timothy 6:16

Attributes of God: Solitariness
By Jennifer Kane

I am not needed—yet I am wanted;
The Lord of glory calls my name.
The earth to Him is but a droplet,
Yet still He loves me all the same.

He owns the cattle on the mountains,
The wealth of ages in His hand;
Yet gave His life, a flowing fountain,
A gift no heart can understand.

This is no meeting of two equals,
But holy mercy reaching low.
The King of kings became my Savior,
His grace abundant, overflow.

He has no need—yet He has chosen,
To set His love on one like me.
O humbled heart, lift up in wonder,
And praise the God who makes you free.

Scripture: Ephesians 1:11, Nehemiah 9:5, 1 Timothy 6:16

I’ll be doing a devotional series focusing on the attributes of God. Beginning with His solitariness.

Before creation, before angels, before man—God was. He is self-existent, self-sufficient, and utterly independent. Unlike us, God does not need anything outside of Himself to exist or to be fulfilled.

Everything unfolds according to His plan and will—not ours, not chance, not fate. God stands alone as the sovereign Author of history. Nehemiah exalts His name as higher than any blessing or praise we could ever give, because He is beyond comparison. And Paul in his letter to Timothy declares His absolute uniqueness: He alone possesses immortality and dwells in light so pure that no created being can approach Him apart from His grace.

This attribute should both humble and comfort us. Humble—because we realize that God is not dependent on us; we depend wholly on Him. Comfort—because such a God, who is complete in Himself, chooses out of love to reveal Himself to us, to redeem us, and to invite us into fellowship with Him.

Today, reflect on the fact that God has no need of you—yet He loves you deeply and has chosen you in Christ. How does that truth reshape your view of worship, prayer, and obedience?

Spend time in prayer, blessing the name of the Lord. Praise Him not because He needs it, but because He deserves it.

Holy and sovereign God, You alone are eternal, dwelling in unapproachable light. Before all things, You were complete in Yourself—needing nothing, lacking nothing. And yet, in Your mercy and love, You chose to create us, redeem us, and call us by name. Lord, I am humbled that though You have no need of me, You still want me, love me, and invite me into fellowship with You. Teach me to worship not out of duty, but out of awe for who You are. Help me to trust Your sovereign will, to walk in obedience to Your Word, and to bless Your glorious name forever. To You be honor, glory, and eternal dominion, through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
