Attributes of God: Decree of God
By Jennifer Kane

From ages past through times to be,
God purposed all eternally.
What’s done in time was known before—
Foreordained by His decree secure.

In great or small, in joy or pain,
His sovereign counsel shall remain.
Yet sin, though ruled by His command,
Springs not from His most holy hand.

Permitted, ordered, yet controlled,
Its bounds are set, its course is told.
For God is good, and none can say
That darkness flows from Light’s pure ray.

His will extends through every age,
Each creature, nation, time, and stage.
Our life, our death, our destiny—
All rest within His sure decree.

As builders show an architect’s plan,
So do God’s works reveal His hand.
Creation speaks, and history sings:
The counsel of the King of kings.

Scripture: Romans 8:28, Ephesians 3:11, Acts 15:18, Psalm 2:7

When Scripture speaks of the decree of God, it speaks not of many shifting decisions, but of one eternal purpose—settled in the infinite wisdom of God from before time began.

For us, life unfolds step by step, thought by thought, decision by decision. Our minds cannot grasp everything at once, so we speak of “God’s decrees” in the plural: His decree of creation, of redemption, of judgment, of providence. But with God there is no succession of thoughts. He does not reason from cause to effect, or adjust plans as circumstances change. His decree is one unified, eternal act of His will, perfect and unchanging.

I hope you comfort in the reminder that every circumstance—pleasant or painful—is included in that decree and works together for the good of those who love Him. Paul in Ephesians calls it His “eternal purpose,” fully centered in Christ. In Acts the word assures us that nothing surprises God: all His works have been known from the beginning.

The decree of God is not cold or mechanical. It is a decree born of love, wisdom, and holiness. It anchors our faith in the truth that history is not random and our lives are not meaningless. Everything bends toward God’s eternal plan in Christ, and not one detail falls outside His sovereign purpose.

When you face uncertainty, trials, or disappointments, remember: none of it is outside of God’s decree. Choose today to rest in His eternal purpose, and let Romans 8:28 be your assurance—that even this, too, will work together for your good and His glory.

Sovereign Father, Your wisdom is infinite and Your purpose eternal. Before the world began, You decreed all that would come to pass. Help me to rest in Your eternal plan, to trust that nothing is by chance, band to believe that all things work together for good in Christ. When my heart trembles with uncertainty, steady me with the truth of Your decree. When I cannot understand, remind me that You have already chosen all things in love. To You, the God of all wisdom, be glory forever and ever. Thank you Jesus and amen.
