The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.
— Psalms 135:6
Remember this, keep it in mind, take it to heart, you rebels. Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’
— Isaiah 46:8-10
In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,
— Ephesians 1:11

Attributes of God: Sovereignty
By Jennifer Kane
O Sovereign God, enthroned on high,
Your will none can withstand;
From earth below to heaven’s sky,
All rests within Your hand.
The rise of kings, the sparrow’s fall,
Are guided by Your might;
No chance, no fate, controls at all—
You govern day and night.
Though mysteries veil Your vast design,
Yet still Your plan is sure;
In faith I claim Your will as mine,
Your purpose will endure.
To You be glory, Lord of all,
Whose reign shall never cease;
The nations bow, the heavens call,
And crown You King of peace.

Scripture: Psalms 135:6, Isaiah 46:8-10, Ephesians 1:11
God’s sovereignty means that He alone is the supreme ruler of the universe. He is not subject to anyone, nor swayed by outside forces. From the mightiest angel to the smallest atom, every created thing is under His complete control. Nothing happens by “chance.”
This reality brings us to a tension we cannot fully grasp: divine sovereignty and human responsibility. On the one hand, God governs all things by His will. On the other, Scripture also affirms our choices, accountability, and responsibility before Him. The Bible does not attempt to soften God’s sovereignty to make room for human freedom, nor does it diminish human responsibility to emphasize divine control. Both truths stand side by side, inviting us to trust rather than to fully explain.
Ultimately, every act of God is directed toward the display of His glory. He created all things for His pleasure, and He governs all things for His purpose. As His children, our highest calling is to glorify Him by recognizing His rule, submitting to His will, and rejoicing in His sovereign hand.
God is the King of kings, exercising perfect control over every detail of His creation. This is not meant to be a philosophical puzzle but a source of deep comfort for believers. His sovereignty anchors our faith, calls us to submit in obedience, and invites us to worship with joy.

Sovereign Lord, You rule over all creation with wisdom, power, and love. Teach me to trust Your will in every circumstance, to lay down my pride, and to worship You with all my heart. Help me to rest in the comfort that nothing is outside of Your control. May my life bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
