God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
— Numbers 23:19
And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.
—1 Samuel 15:29
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
— James 1:17
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
— Hebrews 13:8

Attributes of God: Immutability
By Jennifer Kane
From nothing, Lord, You fashioned me,
Yet You have always reigned;
The Everlasting, Constant One,
Forever You remain.
Your holiness is boundless light,
Your mercy without end;
Your love endures through endless years,
My refuge and my Friend.
No shadow marks Your perfect way,
No wavering thought within;
Eternal goodness, ever sure,
Unchanging, free from sin.
Unmoved by time, unshaken Lord,
The First, the Great I Am;
The glory of Your changeless throne
Resounds through all the land.

Scripture: Numbers 23:19, 1 Samuel 15:29, James 1:17, Hebrews 13:8
Change is a constant reality for us. Seasons shift, people falter, plans fall apart. Even our own hearts can deceive us—what we want one day, we may despise the next. In contrast, Scripture declares a breathtaking truth: God does not change.
His being, His perfections, His purposes, and His promises are eternally the same. He is not fickle. He does not wake up in a different mood. He does not adjust His Word according to cultural trends. What He has said, He will do. Who He is, He will always be.
We can trust His promises. Salvation through Jesus Christ is sure. Grace will never run out. Eternity with Him is certain. Because He is unchanging, His Word stands firm forever.
We can rely on His character. God is always holy, always just, always loving, always merciful. His goodness does not waver; His love does not cool.
We find stability in Him. In a world where everything feels fragile, He is our rock and refuge (Psalm 62:6–7). When the storms of life rage, we can anchor ourselves in His immutability.
Some passages in the Bible speak of God “relenting” or “changing His mind” (e.g., Exodus 32:14, Jonah 3:10). But these are not contradictions. They are written from our human perspective, using language we can understand. God’s warnings are often conditional—when people repent, He consistently shows mercy. His nature does not change; rather, His unchanging character of justice and mercy responds perfectly to changed circumstances.
Anchor your hope in God’s promises. When doubts creep in, remember: His Word is unshakable.
Rest in His character. When your own emotions fluctuate, let His faithfulness steady you.
Stand firm in Christ. Jesus, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, will never abandon you.

Father God, You are my Rock and my Refuge. In a world that changes daily and in a heart that often wavers, I take comfort in knowing that You never change. Thank You that Your promises are sure, Your love is steadfast, and Your Word is eternal. Help me to trust You more deeply, rest in Your constancy, and live with confidence that You are the same forever. Amen.
