“Before There Was Time”

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
— John 1:1-5

Before There Was Time
by Jennifer Kane

Before there was time,
Before stars shimmered in their flight,
Before sound awakened the silence—
Before there was anything.
You were there—Father, Spirit, Son.
You loved me even then.

Through You all things were made,
Atoms danced at Your command,
Light was born beneath Your gaze,
And every heartbeat took its cue
From Your eternal song.
My soul exists because You desired me to be.

From communion, not from chaos,
The cosmos bloomed with beauty’s grace,
Each galaxy a brushstroke of Your affection,
Each dawn a vow renewed—
Creation itself sings, “God is love.”
Your love wrote the heavens, and still You write on me.

Then—O holy wonder!—the Word became flesh.
The Infinite stepped into time,
The Creator clothed Himself in creation,
And walked among the broken,
Calling us beloved.
You came not to rule from afar, but to hold me near.

If all was made through You,
Then nothing is without meaning;
Not a tear, nor breath, nor trial wasted—
All are threads in Your tapestry of grace.
In every moment, You are writing me into Your love story.

Scripture: John 1:1-5

Before there was time, before stars were scattered across the heavens, before a single sound echoed through the void—there was the Word. Jesus, the eternal Word, existed in perfect unity and love with the Father and the Spirit. He is not a product of creation; He is the Creator. Every atom, every beam of light, every heartbeat owes its existence to Him.

When John writes, “The Word was with God, and the Word was God,” he unveils a mystery beyond human comprehension: Jesus is both distinct from God and yet fully God. This is no myth or philosophy—it is the revelation of divine relationship, eternal and alive. Everything that was created in the cosmos was born not from chaos or chance, but from communion and love.

And then—the wonder of wonders—the Word became flesh. The eternal entered time. The infinite took on the finite. The Creator walked among His creation, not as a distant ruler, but as Savior, Healer, and Friend.

If everything was made through Christ, then nothing is meaningless. My existence, and every moment within it, is intentional. The universe itself is a love story spoken by God.

“In Him was life.” Not just existence, but fullness—vibrant, spiritual life. When I feel dry, weary, or lifeless, I don’t need to strive harder; I need to draw nearer to Him. He is not merely the giver of life—He is life.

Darkness tries to hide, confuse, and consume—but it can never overcome the light of Christ. No shadow of doubt, sin, or sorrow is beyond His reach. His light reveals truth and restores hope.

Each morning, before reaching for your phone or turning on the lights, whisper: “Jesus, be my light today.”

Let His Word—the same Word that spoke creation into being—speak life and purpose into you.

Eternal Word, You were before all things, and by You all things hold together. Thank You for stepping into Your creation to bring us life and light. When the world grows dark, help me remember that You are the undefeated Light. Speak life into my heart today, and let me reflect Your glory in all I do. Amen.
