“Light”

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
— Genesis 1:1-2

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
— John 1:1-3

And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light ‘day,’ and the darkness He called ‘night.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
— Genesis 1:3-5

For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:6

When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’
— John 8:12

Light
By Jennifer Kane

Light runs with holy purpose,
Refusing stillness or delay—
So moves the Word of God through time,
Chasing the dark away.

Shine on me, O Radiant One—
Let me not be a wall to Your grace,
But a mirror to scatter Your glory
In every hidden place.

Within each beam of mercy
Is a spark of living flame—
Illumination that whispers love
And calls my soul by name.

In the wavelength of His Spirit
All creation hums in tune—
The heart that yields to Heaven’s flow
Becomes His sacred room.

One Holy Light descended,
Each spark His truth conveys—
From infinite radiance broken small,
To shine through human days.

It travels fast through endless skies,
A whisper sent from far on high—
It bends, it burns, it makes things grow,
It shows what only God can show.

A wave unseen, a spark made bright,
Both matter’s touch and spirit’s sight;
And as the heavens sing His name,
So shines His truth through every flame.

Scripture: Genesis 1:1-2, John 1:1-3, Genesis 1:3-5, 2 Corinthians 4:6, John 8:12

Before time began, before light or form or even the whisper of life, there was God. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit existed in perfect unity—complete, loving, and purposeful. Out of this divine fellowship came creation: not born of need, but of love. The Spirit hovered, the Word spoke, and the Father willed all things into being.

As we journey through the seven days of creation, we discover not only the beauty of God’s handiwork but also His ongoing invitation for us to know Him more deeply. Creation reveals His character—His order, creativity, power, and compassion. In every sunrise, in every breath, and in every act of renewal, we see the same God who spoke, “Let there be…” still speaking life into us today.

Before we begin, let us pause to acknowledge: the Triune God—Father, Son, and Spirit—is the source of all existence. Creation begins with His Word, which is powerful and purposeful, and it continues in our hearts as He makes all things new.

The first word God spoke into the void was not “form,” “life,” or even “love.” It was “light.” Without light, nothing can live, grow, or be seen. It reveals what is hidden, defines direction, and gives warmth to what was once cold.

When God said, “Let there be light,” He was not only illuminating creation but also declaring His intention for humanity—to dwell in the radiance of His presence. From the beginning, God’s light has been the answer to every kind of darkness—whether the chaos of the deep or the confusion of the human heart.

In the New Testament, Paul reminds us that this same Creator has shone His light into our hearts through Jesus Christ. The light that broke through the ancient void now shines in every soul that turns to Him. And Jesus Himself proclaims, “I am the light of the world.” In Him, darkness loses its power. Fear gives way to faith. Confusion turns into clarity. Sin is overcome by grace.

God’s first creative act points us to the heart of redemption: He brings light where there was none. He separates light from darkness, good from evil, and truth from lies—not to condemn, but to call us into fellowship with Himself.

What darkness has tried to cloud your heart lately—fear, doubt, grief, or guilt? Invite God to speak again: “Let there be light.” His Word still holds the power to drive away shadow and bring clarity and peace.

Spend a few moments today in the light—perhaps during sunrise or by a window—and meditate on how God’s presence illuminates your life. Ask Him to reveal one area where He wants to bring spiritual light and renewal.

~~~~~
Lord of Light, thank You for speaking light into the darkness of creation and into the darkness of my heart. Shine in me today so that I may walk in Your truth and reflect Your light to others. In your name I pray, Jesus, amen.
