And God said, ‘Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.’ So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault ‘sky.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
— Genesis 1:6-8
Should you not fear me?’ declares the Lord. ‘Should you not tremble in my presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross. The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail; they may roar, but they cannot cross it.’
— Jeremiah 5:22
Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
— Acts 1:6-11

Sky
By Jennifer Kane
Lord, You stretched the sky between—
a veil of breath, unseen yet sure,
to cradle earth in living air,
a tender balance, pure.
Your Spirit stirs the oxygen
of every humble prayer;
each breath I take ascends to You—
and finds You waiting there.
You warm me with Your nearness, Lord,
You shield me from the flame;
Your mercy burns the meteors
that fall in guilt and shame.
The pressure of Your presence holds
my trembling frame in peace;
the storm I fear becomes the rain
that makes my soul increase.
At twilight, when my faith is thin,
Your colors calm my fear—
and though the sky seems far above,
I know that Heaven’s near.
So let my prayers rise like the mist,
and join the winds that roam—
till all this fragile world of breath
becomes Your dwelling home.

Scripture: Genesis 1:6-8, Jeremiah 5:22, Acts 1:6-11
After bringing forth light, God’s next act of creation was to establish boundaries. He separated the waters, forming the expanse of sky—a space between heaven and earth. This act revealed not only His power but also His divine order. Where there was once endless water and chaos, God spoke division and direction.
Boundaries are not barriers to love but expressions of it. Just as God set limits to the sea, He lovingly sets boundaries in our lives—not to restrain us, but to protect and define the space where we can thrive. The same God who said “Let there be light” now says, “Let there be order.” Chaos met its limit, and balance was introduced into creation.
God’s boundaries reveal His wisdom and care. When we surrender to His order, peace replaces confusion, and we discover the calm that comes from living within His design.
But the sky is more than a physical boundary—it is also a spiritual meeting place. It is where the earthly and the divine seem to touch. Our prayers rise through it; God’s blessings and Spirit descend through it. It is the atmosphere of connection, where heaven and earth meet in communion.
This sacred connection reaches its fullness in Jesus Christ, who ascended through the clouds after His resurrection. The same sky that once divided the waters became the pathway of His divine return to the Father. In that moment, the boundary between heaven and earth became a bridge of grace. Through His Spirit, Jesus now fills both realms—ruling in heaven, yet dwelling within us on earth.
The disciples looked upward that day, eyes fixed on the sky, a symbol of longing and hope. And even now, our prayers lift through that same expanse, confident that the One who ascended hears us and will one day return.
The same God who created the sky invites you into an atmosphere of prayer—a space where your heart reaches heaven. Are there areas where God is calling you to trust His boundaries or to rest in His order? Lift your eyes, not in worry, but in worship, knowing that heaven’s King reigns over both sky and sea, spirit and soul.
Spend a moment outdoors today looking at the sky. Let it remind you of Christ’s ascension and His promise to return. Pray for heaven’s will to be done on earth, and ask God to bring His divine order to any area of your life that feels unsettled.

Father God, thank You for setting loving boundaries that protect and guide me. As You separated the waters and formed the sky, create in me a clear space to breathe, pray, and hear Your voice. May my heart be open to Your Spirit as my prayers rise to You. Thank You for the beauty of Your order and the peace of Your presence. As the sky connects earth to heaven, let my prayers rise to You in faith. Teach me to honor the boundaries You set and to rest beneath Your vast and gracious sky, where Christ reigns and intercedes for me. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
