“Living Earth”

And God said, ‘Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry ground ‘land,’ and the gathered waters he called ‘seas.’ And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.’ And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
— Genesis 1:9–13

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.
—- Psalm 1:1-3

But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
Matthew 13:23

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
— John 15:5

Living Earth
By Jennifer Kane

The Earth is not mere stone and clay,
But God’s vast stage where life displays;
From anchored root to mountain high,
Each part declares His grand design.

He carved the bed where rivers flow,
Placed iron deep, let seasons show;
His tilt of time, His orbit’s dance,
Bids fields awake, gives trees their chance.

Dark humus rich, with secret care,
Holds water, air, and soil rare;
Each spec and root, though small and still,
Obeys the whisper of God’s will.

The humble ground, so oft ignored,
Transforms the fallen, feeds the stored;
As hearts made soft by Spirit’s toil,
We, too, bear fruit in living soil.

In every seed a promise sleeps,
Awakened when the sunlight creeps;
The water stirs, the roots descend,
And life begins where earth and heaven blend.

He is the Vine, the Light, the Rain,
Through drought or flood, through joy and pain;
Till all creation’s song is sung—
One symphony of life begun.

Scripture: Genesis 1:9–13, Psalm 1:1-3, Matthew 13:23, John 15:5

On the third day of creation, God called forth land from beneath the waters and commanded it to bear fruit. In one breathtaking act, He established both foundation and fruitfulness—firm ground to stand upon and living growth to nourish creation.

Before this day, the world was covered in water—fluid, shifting, and uncertain. But when God spoke, the waters obeyed, and the dry land emerged. What was once hidden beneath the surface became a place of stability and purpose. Likewise, when we allow God to gather the “waters” of our chaos, He reveals a foundation where faith can take root.

Then God caused the land to produce vegetation—plants and trees bearing seeds according to their kinds. In that moment, He set in motion the pattern of life reproducing life, of growth continuing from generation to generation. Every seed contained the promise of more. Every tree became both the fruit of His word and the vessel of future abundance.

In the same way, God desires our lives to be good soil—fertile hearts where His Word can take root and grow. Jesus reminds us that the seed of truth only bears lasting fruit in those who not only hear but understand and live the Word. And He calls us to abide in Him, the true Vine, for apart from His life flowing through us, we cannot produce spiritual fruit.

Psalm 1 paints the image perfectly: those who delight in God’s Word are like trees planted by streams of water, steadfast and fruitful in every season. Their roots reach deep into God’s promises; their lives provide shade, nourishment, and hope to others.

Creation teaches us that true fruitfulness begins with a solid foundation. God not only brings order to the surface but cultivates life beneath it—faith that grows in hidden places, roots that draw from His Spirit, and fruit that reveals His goodness to the world.

Are you standing on the firm ground of God’s truth today? Are there areas of your heart that need to be “gathered,” cleared, or made ready for His Word to take root? Let Him prepare your soil. Abide in Jesus, and allow His life to flow through you so that you may bear fruit that lasts.

Spend time today meditating on a verse from Scripture. Picture it as a seed planted in your heart. Ask God to water it with His Spirit and help it grow into an action, habit, or word of encouragement that blesses someone else this week.

Heavenly Father, my Creator and Sustainer, thank You for forming both the ground beneath me and the growth within me. Gather the waters of confusion and reveal firm foundation in Your Word. Plant Your truth deep in my heart, and let my life bear fruit that honors You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
