In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

The First Day
By Jennifer Kane
The earth lay dark, a shapeless void,
No stars adorned the sky,
Till God declared with sovereign voice,
“Let there be light on high.”
The light obeyed and filled the deep,
The darkness fled away,
And morning rose with golden hues,
The first and glorious day.
So too, the heart in sin confined,
A cold and lifeless grave,
Heard heaven’s voice, a tender call:
“Awake! For I will save.”
A spark of grace, a flame of hope,
Broke through the shadowed soul;
From death to life the spirit soared,
Made clean, renewed, and whole.
As light divided night from day,
So Christ brings truth and peace,
Transforming hearts with radiant love,
And chains of sin release.
The chaos fades, the Spirit moves,
A holy work begun,
Each life reborn reflects His might,
A victory hard-won.
Oh, wondrous light that cannot dim,
No power can it defy,
It pierces through the darkest night,
And lifts our gaze on high.
The first day of creation speaks
Of hope for hearts made new;
For just as light brought forth the dawn,
His mercy breaks through too.
From ancient words to present grace,
His glory shines the same,
And all who walk within His light
Will glorify His name.

Scripture: Genesis 1:1-5
As we step into a new year, Genesis 1:1-5 reminds us of God’s power to create beauty, order, and purpose from nothingness. The God who spoke light into existence is the same God who hovers over the unformed and dark places in our lives, bringing new beginnings.
The word “created” (bara in Hebrew) highlights God’s ability to make something entirely new. Just as He created the universe from nothing, He can create hope in despair, peace in chaos, and purpose in uncertainty.
This truth is foundational as we start a new year. Life often feels formless, void, or dark at times, but we serve a God who is not limited by these challenges. Instead, He transforms them into opportunities for His glory.
Just as He authored creation, He authors the story of your life. Entrust this year to His hands, knowing He is capable of weaving beauty into every chapter.
In creation, God’s Word was the catalyst for change. His Word continues to illuminate our paths and provide direction. Commit to spending time in Scripture, allowing His truth to guide your year.
The Spirit of God hovered over the waters before creation. Even when things seem chaotic or unclear, His Spirit is present, preparing to bring forth transformation. Trust that He is at work even when you cannot see it.
Reflect on areas of your life that feel formless, void, or dark. Write them down and surrender them to God in prayer. Memorize Genesis 1:1-3 as a reminder of God’s power to bring light and new beginnings. Spend time daily in God’s Word, asking Him to illuminate your path and inspire your steps.
May this year be a testimony to the God who creates, redeems, and restores. Let us begin with Him, the ultimate source of all life and hope.

Dear Creator God, thank You for new beginnings. As You brought light to the darkness and order to the chaos, bring Your presence into every aspect of my life this year. Help me to trust Your plans, walk in Your light, and lean on Your Spirit. May this year be a reflection of Your glory and creativity in my life. In Jesus name, Amen.
