For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
—Hebrews 4:12
And how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
—2 Timothy 3:15-17
But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
—Matthew 4:4
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
—Romans 15:4
I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
—Revelation 22:18-19
How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.
—Psalm 119:9-16

First Ballad Part II: The Word of God
By Jennifer Kane
The Scriptures, breathed by God’s own will,
To guide, correct, and teach,
A lamp to light our earthly path,
God’s truth within our reach.
A scalpel sharp, the Word will slice,
Exposing sin within,
It cuts to heal, to cleanse the soul,
And purge the heart of sin.
No words of man could ever claim
The truth the Spirit brings,
For prophets wrote as He inspired,
Their pens moved by His wings.
To hold His teachings, firm and true,
Is more than mind or creed,
Disciples walk the narrow way,
And find in Him their need.
Traditions high, if wrongly raised,
Can dim the holy flame,
For worship void of God’s own Word
Is worship made in vain.
Your life and doctrine side by side
Must stand, a perfect pair,
For truth and action joined as one
Will save you from despair.
Like noble Bereans, search each day,
The Scriptures deep and wide,
Examine words of those who teach—
In God’s truth, you will abide.
The mirror shows what lies within,
Reflecting faults and grace,
Yet if we fail to act on truth,
We spurn His holy face.
The Word will judge us in the end,
Its verdict sure and right,
Will we live by its perfect law
Or stumble in the night?

Scriptures: Hebrews 4:12, 2 Timothy 3:15-17, Matthew 4:4, Romans 15:4, Revelation 22:18-19, and Psalm 119:9-16
We live in a world saturated with voices, philosophies, and opinions—but only one Word is described as “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12). The Word of God is not static ink on a page. It is not merely religious tradition. It is the breath of God made readable, receivable, and life-transforming.
The Word of God, speaks with clarity and reverence about the purpose and power of all scripture. Like a scalpel, it cuts. Like a mirror, it reveals. Like a lamp, it lights the way.
The Word of God is:
Living and active. Not a dead document, but one that discerns the heart and transforms lives. God’s Word has spiritual force; it penetrates our innermost being, distinguishing soul from spirit, and realigning us with His will.
Inspired and complete m. All Scripture is “breathed out by God.” Not one word is accidental. It is our source of wisdom, correction, and training, equipping us not just to believe, but to live rightly.
Spiritual nourishment. Jesus Himself quoted Scripture to fight temptation, declaring that we live by every word from God. As bread sustains the body, so His Word sustains the soul.
A wellspring of hope and endurance. The Scriptures comfort us by revealing the God who never changes. What was written “in former days” still instructs us today.
When human ideas eclipse Scripture, our worship becomes empty. We must guard God’s Word, not edit it for convenience.
Psalm 119 offers the solution: “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
This is not a call to Bible knowledge alone. It’s a call to obedience. To let the Word dwell in us richly and bear fruit.
Do I seek God’s Word daily like the Bereans, measuring everything I hear against it?
Do I allow it to expose and transform me—or do I just read and walk away unchanged?
Do I live by it, or do I treat it like a side dish to my own preferences?
~~~~~
Father, thank You for Your Word—alive, powerful, and true. Forgive me for when I treat it as optional or merely informative. Help me to treasure it in my heart, to walk in its truth, and to allow it to transform me daily. May I hunger for it more than bread and submit to it more than any human opinion. Let Your Word dwell in me richly, and let it bear fruit that glorifies You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
